METRO RIDER SEES METRO MAKING LIFE HARD

The Capital Times, April 19, 2008

Dear Editor: I am a freshman at Madison Area Technical College and attend classes at the Truax campus on the east side. Because I live in downtown and do not have a car, I take the bus. After one and a half semesters using the Madison Metro Transit System, I believe changes need to be made.

I have had many experiences where the drivers failed to get students to class on time. Numerous times I have been at the bus stop 10 to 15 minutes early, only to have the bus come 5 to 25 minutes late. This is unacceptable.

Even when buses do come on time, I have been late to class. On several occasions I have witnessed drivers stop in front of the Metro bus station to take a seven-minute cigarette break. Other drivers have just stopped buses at various stops when they were running on schedule and then passed other stops with passengers waiting for them in order to make up time.

These are only a few examples of problems with Madison Metro. Management should monitor drivers more closely and check if they are on schedule, especially when they are responsible for getting people to work, school and other important places on time. Until then, a lot of our tax dollars will continue to be wasted on drivers with poor performances and a management that will sit by and do nothing about it, even after hearing many complaints.
